Rentap Libau and His Legacy.

"Agi idup, agi ngelaban"; Fight As Long As You Live.

He died in 1870 and the whole Borneo was in shock as one of the strongest Raja Ulu was never to be heard again Libau RENTAP was a man of principal. He swore that he would never see the face of a White Man again in his life. He met several defeats but never surrendered. He had been branded as a great rebellious Dayak Iban War Leader, hunted high and low and yet he managed to live until he met his natural death during the period of his retirement from active war fighting. He fought gallantly defending his country land and his people from several attacks made by the intruders until his whole power was broken on 28 October 1861 but not his life.

Rentap Libau's Grave located at Entabai, Sarawak.

His name is still mentioned and remembered today as a great Dayak Iban Chief and Dayak Iban War Leader and also the Hero of Bukit Sadok in the history of Sarawak and Malaysia. He continues to inspire some Iban Dayaks especially those who joined the military initially as trackers like the Malaysia’s most decorated war hero Kanang anak Langkau, Awang anak Raweng and other heroes. His battlecry  was " Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban" which means that "I will fight as long I will live" . He is a legacy to be cherished and remembered forever.

The Downfall

Well, I'm prety sure that youre waiting for the continuation of my story.Well, settle down and I'll carryon with the story. Okay as in the last post know I inform you all about how did Rentap Libau retaliate against the Rajah Brookes.well theydid manage  to destroy James Brooke's fort at Nanga  Skrang but James Brooke didn't go down without a fight. What he did was even worse. James Brooke went and destroyed Rentap's village at Sungai Lang by burning down the houses in the Village. Rentap had no other choice but to retreat to Bukit Sadok where they built a fort in order to defend themselves. at that time, Rentap had the support from all the villagers and they called him "Raja Ulu". He led the tribe at Bukit Sadok for one month in defending the fort built there. Unfortunately, James Brooke managed to exploit Bukit Sadok and attacked Rentap and he managed to retreat to Entabai but sadly, his retaliation ended in 1863 while he was setting the strategies in order to fight back the Rajah Brookes.

The Implementation of Libau Rentap.

Libau Rentap. He was some fighter of course. His rage with the Rajah Brookes' began by attacking the forts built by James Brooke. he fought with his might in order to claim the rights to the land of Borneo as he is the "son of the soil " of Sarawak. he used a Cannon which goes by the name of "Bujang Timpang Berang"

A Cannon used by Rentap Libau ; The Bujang Timpang Berang.

. The cannon was an ancestor's heirloom and the cannon was made in 1515. At that time the Rajah Brookes went and adressed the Ibanese people who retaliate against him, were pirates ans should be terminated at all costs. The Fort at Nanga Skrang was managed to be destroyed by Rentap Libau's batalion but little that they know...
The picture shows Libau Rentap an his clan planning to ambush the fort.

The Uprising of Libau Rentap

Thank you for still tuning in with my blog. For my next  post it is going to inform on what triggers the uprising of Rentap fighting against the Rajah Brooke's .

It all started when the Rajah Brooke came in the straits of Borneo in search for raw materials but then it was actually none of their interest. They actually wanted to claim the land from the the indigenous people or 'son of the soil' of Sarawak, mainly Kuching, in order to rule the land . An intervention of power occurred when the current person who governed Sarawak was Pangeran Mahkota who was of Royal Brunei descendant because at that current time, Borneo was controlled by the Royal Brunei . Frankly speaking, Pangeran Mahkota was being very dishonest by making the other dignitaries as they have no power or jurisdiction in their place. Following by that case. The Rajah Brooke s' went in and interfered and persuaded the Sarawakians  to rise up to retaliate with the current government led by Pangeran Mahkota. The Rajah Brooke s' were able to control Sarawak as a result from the rebellion.

What was against the norm of Rentap is when there were a lot of laws set up in the country. The practice of head-hunting was prohibited and there were taxes which was unfair for the citizens in Sarawak. This is then where dissatisfaction occurs from Rentap . He then went and attacked the forts built by the Rajah Brooke soldiers located in Nanga Skrang near Bukit Sadok .Below is a picture of one of many Rajah s' Forts, named Fort Margherita.

The Unsung Hero; Libau "Earth Shaker" Rentap

Assalamualaikum w.b.t. and salutations to all, especially to my respected lecturer for this subject . Sir Zainol Bahri ,who is dedicated in giving guidance throughout the completion of this blog project.

Starting off. my blog will inform on the origin of Libau Rentap. Libau is a an Ibanese name which translates "earth shaker" . Born in the Skrang area of Second Division in Sarawak . He lived normally as an Ibanese kid in the longhouse. he started to be known when he was appointed to be leading fighting man in the village . In the village he was then called "manok sabong" which literally means "fighting cockerel". The name was given by a paramount chief  of the Sarawak Division who goes by the name of, Orang Kaya Pemancha Dana "Bayang"

From that day forward, Rentap took up Orang Kaya Pemancha Dana as his mentor in being a warrior and had fought many battles in order to keep peace in the division. His name struck up to other divisions of When he killed a boatful of Sambas and and on that boat was the nephew of Sultan Sambas which also had his 'keris' looted by Rentap. From that incident, he was then recognised from the 'Dayak Iban Skrangs' or tribes who are aware for his chivalry and bravery .
